Hot Competition

The sun-drenched morning cast a golden hue across the Republican Valley; the sky was painted with spotless blue strokes, and the clear crisp air did not foretell of the long, hot afternoon to come. Flags drooped listlessly outside the crow’s nest as athletes, coaches, parents and patrons entered the McCook track field for the annual Maywood Track Invite. As the day wore on, the track heated up and so did the competition.

The Maywood Girls after all of their hard work finished 5th overall out of 9 teams including Hitchcock County, Elwood, Southwest, Medicine Valley, Hayes Center, Eustis-Farnam, Wallace, and McPherson County. Grace Koubek finished 4th in the 200 meter dash and Payton Kahler finished 6th in the 200 meter dash also. Kayla Minary ran her way to first in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs while BreAnna Kahler finished 6th in the 3200 meter run. Marisa Foster hurdled her way to 2nd in the 100 meter hurdles and 4th in the 300 meter hurdles. Abby Werkmeister won the girls’ shot put and discus.

The Maywood Boys worked for and achieved 6th place overall with Calyn Werkmeister sprinting for 3rd in the 200 meter dash and 5th in the 100 meter dash. Keri Blackler came in 5th in the 400 meter dash and 6th in long jump while Bryar Gerlach came in 2nd in the 800 meter run and 4th in the 1600 meter run. Luke White earned 5th in the 3200 meter run. Those four runners also got 6th in the 4x400 meter relay. Jace Walther got 4th in shot put.

Overall it was a good showing for Maywood, but all good things must come to an end. As the competition drew to a close, the sun, a gold Spanish medallion, hung complacently in the western sky, team tents came down, the area was swept of trash and debris, and athletes and patrons headed home for much-needed cool refreshments.
