Maywood’s Floriculture Team Punches Ticket for Nebraska State FFA Competition

The Road to the Nebraska State FFA Convention starts in the classroom. The Maywood FFA members have been hard at work trying to harness their skills in floriculture and livestock management. They attend FFA practice every Monday night and Thursday morning studying for various competitions to ensure that they will head into competition with a mindset to compete at a high level. Students also spend time in class to work on their respective events. With at least 10 hours of required practice time, students are well prepared for the CDE. This encourages more chapter involvement and participation. Which is one of the main goals that the Officer team had set at the beginning of the year. CDE stands for Career Development Events. District 11 holds two CDE competitions consisting of different events. From livestock management to floriculture and meats evaluation to nursery and landscape.

The Maywood FFA Chapter attended the first spring CDE on February 11th. The livestock management team was comprised of Von Fritsche, Bailey Brown, Tucker Hartley, and Bryar Gerlach. As a team they placed 5th out of 15 teams from other area FFA Chapters. They were awarded white ribbons for receiving fourth place in the Dairy, Beef, and Swine categories. The floriculture team team that included Grace Koubek, Hope Stone, Bailey Brown, and Marisa Foster placed 2nd overall in the floriculture competition. Marisa Foster won second place individually along with Bailey Brown who received a red ribbon and Hope Stone who earned a white ribbon. By placing 2nd overall the floriculture team punched their ticket for a chance to compete at the Nebraska State FFA Convention which will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska starting from April 8th through the 1oth.
