Tigers Abuzz at Quiz Bowl

January 14th was almost like a game-show with buzzers buzzing and answers flying through the air like confetti. The reason for all the buzz and commotion was the RPAC Quiz Bowl at Southwest High School. The Maywood Team had a rough start against a few of the first teams they played.  However, after a pep talk from Coach Kinnison, their spirits were lifted and they were able to promptly go 6-0 in the last six rounds. The Tigers were able to come back with their excellent knowledge in science.  Their 6-7 record left the Tigers sitting in sixth place.  Coach Kinnison stated “I was much happier with this result than previous years.” Overall, it was a productive day. The Maywood Tigers’ quiz bowl team represents our school and community, so remember to wish them well when you pass them in the halls and give them kudos for their efforts.

Quiz bowl is a quiz game that tests players on a wide variety of academic subjects such as math, science, history, geography and literature. Quiz bowl is usually played by middle school, high school, and university students in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The game is typically played with a buzzer system between at least two teams, usually consisting of four or five players each. Players are read questions and try to score points for their team by buzzing first and responding with the correct answer. If the player answers correctly they earn points and their team is given a bonus question where they are allowed to speak with each other to find an answer. Quiz bowl is most commonly played in a tossup/bonus format, which consists of a series of two different types of questions. Other formats, particularly in local competitions, may deviate from the above rules.
