Annual State FFA Convention

April 9-11, Maywood FFA members attended the 86th Annual State FFA Convention held in Lincoln at the East Campus of UNL and The Cornhusker Hotel. Over 3700 FFA members from 150 chapters attended the event and wore their official dress uniforms every day.  In addition to several other events, Maywood FFA members attended a career fair at the Pershing center, and went to a leadership academy where they played games that involved setting goals and having consistency.  An exciting moment in the convention occurred when Justine Stone and Katelynn Gerlach walked on stage at Pershing Auditorium and received an award for the the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Grant. While on stage they were greeted by, and shook hands with, Governor Heineman.

The floriculture team which consists of Katelynn Gerlach, Abby Werkmeister, Justine Stone, and Marisa Foster, finished 4th overall at State FFA as a team and Justine placed 9th individually. Bailey Brown received silver ranking in her Coop speech titled “Another Patronage Check.” The Nursery and Landscape team also competed at State FFA.  Junior high FFA members also attended and participated in JR High FFA Quiz Bowl. While taking a break from the convention, the junior high students went to the Gateway Mall and there met Husker men’s basketball player Terran Petteway! Later the chapter ate at Lazlo’s for a chapter dinner with past FFA Alumni. The FFA members would like to thank Mrs. Snyder for all her hard work helping and preparing them for all their contests!
