Preschoolers crawl into kindergarten with the Very Hungry Caterpillar!
On April 27, Maywood held its annual Kindergarten Roundup with students arriving at 8:00 am for a “Very Hungry Caterpillar" themed morning based on the story written by Eric Carle. Parents joined in later for a meeting and tour of the school. The children and parents enjoyed a tasty lunch together at 11:00, and then the future kindergartners had recess on playground to end their day.
Inviting parents and pre-kindergartners to meet teachers and see their schools six months before school opens can noticeably reduce first-day jitters -- for everyone. Called kindergarten round-ups, these events also let teachers meet their incoming charges. Round-ups are an increasingly popular orientation program for pre-kindergarteners and their parents. The events bring families to school to see classrooms, meet teachers, and experience a kindergarten day. Most schools hold the events in late April or early May.
