The first-ever results of Nebraska’s new accountability system, called Accountability of a Quality Education System Today and Tomorrow (AQuESTT), were shared with the public on December 4th. The report ranked Maywood’s middle school and high school in the top 13% out of 1,130 Nebraska schools with both schools earning a classification of excellent.

“We all should be very proud to know that our middle school and high school are in the top 13% of the 1,130 schools that make up the state of Nebraska’s accountability system and that our school district is in the top 25th percentile in the state,” said Trent Benjamin, Superintendent of Maywood Public School.

Under AQuESTT, schools are classified as excellent, great, good, or needs improvement. The Maywood school district received an overall classification of great which placed it in top 25th percentile in the state.

Maywood has three schools graded.  Grades 9-12 is considered a high school by NDE.  Grades 5-8 is middle school, and grades 3-4 make up the elementary.  The state gives an overall grade for the district.  The results showed the following for Maywood:

·       Maywood Elementary – Great

·       Maywood Middle School – Excellent

·       Maywood High School – Excellent

·       Maywood District – Great

Superintendent Benjamin went on to explain that the elementary received a Great which means they are in the top 54% in the state. Maywood’s overall grade was Great. “With two Excellents and one Great our district is in the top 25% in the state of Nebraska,” said Benjamin.

The following information from schooldigger.com shows the significant growth and improvement Maywood has made the previous four years and all school districts were taking the same state assessment tests:

·       2014-15              46/226                80th Percentile

·       2013-14              91/231                61st Percentile

·       2012-13              226/236              4th Percentile

·       2011-12              216/235              8th Percentile

·       2010-11              192/239              20th Percentile

According to Superintendent Benjamin the new system “is broader than our past state and federal systems in that it goes beyond test scores to classify schools on, among other factors, growth, student improvement, and graduation rates as well as a detailed analysis of individual schools. Though AQuESTT will continue to utilize NeSA scores in reading, math, science, and writing, to classify schools and districts, this is a comprehensive system.”

Benjamin stated in closing that “this new system will give educators better information about what works and what doesn’t. But regardless of whatever accountability system is put in place, success begins when everyone is invested in the outcome - staff, students, parents, community – has the desire and dedication to succeed. Maywood School District will continue to make great progress because we have all these key elements working together for us.”
