Cool summer evening a welcome guest at back-to-school bash

The tantalizing aroma of grilled burgers and barbequed baked beans drifted over the parking lot and playing fields; brightly colored balloons, tied to benches, danced in the unseasonably cool breeze. This all made for a festive and pleasant atmosphere at Maywood on Monday, August 17th, during MPS’s annual “Back-to-School Bash.” Dozens of Maywood families gathered at picnic tables on the grade school landing for the welcome-back picnic and open house. While neighbors feasted on the delicious meal - provided by Maywood’s PTO and school board - children played games in the center field and visited their classrooms, teachers, classmates, and-soon-to-be new friends.

This annual tradition also gave the community and school board the opportunity to meet the five new staff members moving into the district. The new staff are Principal Jason Brown; Kendra Burkholder, pre-school; Jeff Ellis, Health/PE; Tracy Kennedy, kindergarten; Jennifer Kinnison, 7-11 English; Shane Miller, math; Karen Sayler, speech pathologist; and Stacey Zeigler, custodian. The back-to-school bash is positive reminder of the support and encouragement that MPS receives from the community. MPS strives to be a progressive and innovative school while retaining its small-town traditions and values of welcoming all to its community and working together to provide the best education possible for its youth.
