Maywood festival of careers
Maywood Public Schools hosted area businesses and the vehicles involved with a variety of careers on May 1, 2015 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm in front of the school. Groups of students visited the vehicles and employees for approximately 5-10 minutes each to learn about the employment opportunity, education involved in attaining the career, and the vehicle that is used to complete their job requirements.
The highlight of the afternoon came when Midwest Medair’s twin engine helicopter circled over the school before landing on the front lawn of MPS. There were plenty of oohs and aahs as the chopper, with its eye-catching purple, black and yellow custom paint job, floated like a butterfly before touching down on the field of green. Medair has the distinction of being Nebraska’s only FAA approved commercial air carrier, certified to perform flights under instrument flight rules, day or night. In fact, only about 5% of medical emergency aircraft nationwide have this capability. This allows this state-of-the-art, emergency-room aircraft to transport patients when other helicopters are grounded.
There were numerous other vehicles and exhibits vying for attention: a bright red fire truck, a polished white sheriff’s cruiser, a mobile petting farm, a commercial farming applicator, and a race car to name just a few. Students, teachers, parents and patrons had a fantastic afternoon and learned a lot of valuable information about different careers and the vehicles that help people do their jobs. The afternoon ended the day with a tasty ice cream treat!
