U.S. Congressman Smith Visits Maywood Students

During the summer the school administration was contacted, via email by the U.S. Representative for Nebraska's 3rd congressional district, Congressman Adriene Smith. The email was requesting permission to come to our school and talk with the students. As this opportunity is quite rare the administration was very willing to let him come and speak with the students. The email also stated that the Congressman wanted to speak with a smaller group of students. Due to this preference, the history teacher Mr. Carroll chose a select few from his classes to come and speak with Mr. Smith.

Mr. Carroll chose seven students from various classes and grade levels to sit in on the discussion with Mr. Smith. On Wednesday, the 27th of August, the students met with the Congressman in the media center. Gathered around the small table Congressman Smith talked to the students over a range of topics: including immigration, economics, trade with Japan, as well as our relationships with North Korea and China. After talking with the students they asked the Congressman questions. These questions covered a variety of topics ranging from importing parts and the well-being of horses to the age old question of why he became a politician. All in all, the students who were privileged enough to listen to, and speak with, the Congressman most likely walked away with a different view of things.

Nebraska's 3rd congressional district seat encompasses the western three-fourths of the state; it is the largest Congressional district in thestate, covering nearly 65,000 square miles, two time zones and 68 counties. It includes Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, North Platte, Scottsbluff, and McCook - basically the entire Western region of Nebraska.
