My name is Ruth Vakoc. I grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado and graduated from Poudre High School. I attended the Larimer County Vocational Tech School and received my certification in Secretarial work. At that point, I worked for Ultimate Support Systems in the Accounting Department for one and a half years. I moved to Scottsbluff with my family and worked in several bakeries as a cake decorator for several years. After realizing that my true calling was not cakes but teaching, I went back to school to pursue my teaching degree. I graduated with my Associates Degree from Western Nebraska Community College and subsequently transferred to the University of Nebraska at Kearney where I received my Bachelor of Music Education degree.
I am married to Ted Vakoc. He is an electrician, locksmith, and currently one of our custodians at the school. We have nine children, eight of them are now adults. Our oldest daughter, Shannon, is living in Belgium with her new husband. Our next daughter, Michelle, lives in Fort Collins with her husband and two children. Our third daughter, Stephanie, lives in Mitchell, NE with her husband and two children. Our son, Lucas, lives in Fort Collins also and retreads tires for trucks and implement equipment. Our daughter, Asia, lives in Casper and has a daughter. Our son, Marcus, lives in Omaha. Our daughter, Arya, lives in Beaver City, NE. Our last daughter, Leslie, lives in Fort Collins and is a waitress at a Mexican Restaurant. Our youngest son, Andrew, is a sophomore at the high school this year.
I am the Music Teacher here at Maywood. I did my student-teaching in Kearney and at Wilcox-Hildreth last year and have been a substitute teacher for the past two years in Holdrege. I was also the GED instructor in Holdrege for two years and enjoyed helping adults that wanted to learn. I teach Band, Choir, and all of the elementary music classes. I am also helping coach the One-Act Play this year.
My goal is to help students learn music, how to read it, and enjoy using their music skills throughout their lifetime. I am looking forward to working with all of the students at Maywood this year.
