Beautiful Weather, Marching Bands, Games and a Husker Win - Life Is Good!

The 129th Annual Wellfleet Fall Festival kicked off last weekend on Saturday,September 12. Family and friends converged on the small prairie town to celebrate. The day started off at 7 a.m. with delicious breakfast burritos and buttermilk biscuits smothered in sausage gravy. This lip-smacking cuisine was provided by 4-H students to help raise funds for their Washington trip. Following that was the annual Stock Dog Classic that began at 9 a.m. At the same time the ‘gravel grinder’ bike race kicked into gear. Contestants raced their bicycles over a unique combination of quiet country roads, that were both scenic and challenging. The route started and ended at the Wellfleet Fall Festival. If you were there around 9:15 a.m. and had a lot of energy you could have ran the 5k/1 mile run for a $10 entry fee. A craft show generated interest from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Also starting at 10 a.m. there was an open class photography contest. Co-ed Sand Volleyball spiked off around 10 a.m. The annual Antique Tractor Pull got into full swing started at 11 a.m.

Patrons that worked up their appetites with all the activities, were treated to mouthwatering BBQ beef sandwiches sponsored by the Wellfleet Community Club. If patrons were still hungry after this, an ice cream and pie social was held following the BBQ. A highlight of the afternoon was when the Maywood School band marched in the parade. The theme for this year’s parade was “Welcome to the Dusty trails.” After the parade there were numerous kids’ games held. They had things like water balloon sling shot, foot races, bike races, ‘stik’ horse, goat penning and goat scramble. Turtle races got off to a slow-but-sure start at 3:00 p.m. Following the turtle races was a watermelon feed. The Poker Run began at 5 p.m. with a $5 entry fee.

After a long activity-filled day in the sun, patrons relaxed in front of the big screen and watched the Huskers - South Alabama football game.  Bret Alan and the CRB band rounded out the day’s events providing live music at the annual free dance. All in all, the beautiful weather, delicious food and community fellowship made the 129th annual Wellfleet Fall Festival a day to remember.
