New Teams, Same Dream: A Perfect Season

It’s going to be an exciting year for Maywood sports this year since the recent co-op with the Hayes Center Cardinals. For the next five years the Maywood Tigers will be known as the Maywood-Hayes Center Wolves. We have co-opted with Hayes Center in all High School Sports. This fall we are looking forward to watching the green and black battle it out on the hash marks of the gridiron, the hardwood floor of the volleyball court, and the soft green grass of the race course!

The football team feels that they will have a pretty good run this year and have a winning record. Football Coaches Loren Wagner, Bryson Kennedy, and Rick Gilmore have really been helping the team come together and work hard. They have 14 boys on the roster this year which is the perfect amount to be able to scrimmage against each other. This will help them to be able to practice against their opponents’ different offensive and defensive strategies. The MHC Wolves’ first game is against the Banner Co. Wildcats at Hayes Center on Friday, September 4th. Kickoff starts at 3:00 P.M.

MHC Volleyball Coach, Les Reinke, said that “the biggest hurdle with the Hayes Center co-op has been the practice start time. The girls have adjusted great and have been very productive so far this year. I hope they continue to be positive and continue to work hard.” The Volleyball team has 12 girls on their roster this year. The team plays the Southwest Rough Riders in their first game on Thursday, September 3rd starting at 5:00 P.M. Coach Reinke said “First games are always nerve racking for coaches. Southwest is a young, but disciplined team. We will need to play very aggressive and be ready for a quick tempo type game. If we can do the little things correct, we will be able to compete.”

The Cross-Country team has also been working hard, running miles and miles each day in the blistering heat. Coach Janice Arent said that “the kids are working hard every day to find their ideal pace and increase their stamina.” With a great mindset like that the “Fantastic Four,” Tucker Hartley, Tate Hartley, JC VanDrimmelen and Kayla Minary could have a couple state qualifiers on their way to Kearney in October. The Cross-Country team will run in their first meet of the season in Cambridge on Friday, September 4th at 2:00 P.M. Go Green and Black!
