Can We Remodel It? Yes We Can!

When you walk into the Maywood Jr. Sr. High building, you will instantly notice several big changes. Over the summer, Maywood Public Schools had many new remodeling projects take place in and around the school just in time for the new school year. All new ivory-colored lockers were installed in the commons area and the west pod of the school. These replaced the original smaller, orange lockers that surrounded the commons area. What really catches your attention, though, are the large hand-made display cases built by the industrial technology teacher, Mr. Kennedy. These attractive solid-oak trophy cases were put in the commons area to recognize students’ awards in academics and athletics as well as to display the new Maywood-Hayes Center Wolves' apparel. Another major project that transformed the high school’s appearance was all the classrooms were repainted and new carpeting was installed. A final touch was the installation of new smart boards in teachers’ rooms providing a more hands-on, interactive learning experience for students. Many teachers also received new desks for their classrooms.

The music room got a full makeover with painted walls, new carpet replacing the old wood floor, and new lighting that brightens up the room. In addition, Mr. Kennedy built new shelves that were installed to hold the students instruments. The area that was formerly the concession stand was remodeled with a wall dividing the concessions from the new teachers’ lounge. This new addition provides more room for staff to eat, work or hold small meetings.

The Preschool room had both brick and cement work done on its exterior, and the interior walls were completely stripped and insulated to give the young learners a more comfortable environment in which to lean. This was a big improvement from before when the preschool room was directly affected by severe winter temperatures. In addition, the former distance-learning room is sporting freshly painted walls, new carpet and a large conference table. This provides a versatile room for special meetings, conferences and student testing.  Finally, a new air conditioning unit was installed in the weight room and new lighting, both of which benefit the athletes as they exercise.

MPS invites and welcomes patrons to visit the school to gain a full appreciation for the huge amount of remodeling that was done over the summer.
