Every day the students at Maywood are provided with a meal for lunch but most people don’t think of the effort that is put in to prepare that meal and serve it up. Most days there are just two cooks keeping all 172 students from preschool all the way up to seniors ready to learn with a full stomach. The cooks make the food as well as serve it to each and every student one by one, which is not an easy job. The cooks don’t just cook and serve the food but also plan out what will be served days before it is actually made. A truck containing the food arrives every Tuesday to be unloaded so that the pantry is always full of the items needed to cook lunch for that week. Depending on what is being served, some food is prepared days before it is served making their schedule even more important.

Lorraine Mullen is the head cook and her co-workers are Marlene Jones, Teresa Tiller, and Candy Sailor. Lorraine has been working as a cook at Maywood for 25 years. She wanted to be a cook because it worked with her family’s schedule well and even after all these years she continues to do it because she likes to see the kids every day and enjoys talking to them as she serves the meal. Although they cook many types of food, Lorraine’s favorite thing to cook is desserts and her least favorite thing is tacos because they are time consuming to serve. Being a cook here at Maywood takes at least eight hours of work every day to prepare and serve on average 140 students so when you see one of these ladies as you go by give them a big thank you for all of their hard work. A hearty hurrah to MPS's lunch ladies!!

What are some favorite lunches for both students and staff?

#1 - Chicken Nuggets

#2 - Chili with Cinnamon Rolls

#3 - Stromboli
