May in the Media Center

Wow! It’s already May!!! I’m always a little sad to see the school year end, though I do look forward to having time to recalibrate, research and READ! Thanks to excellent student recommendations, I’ve got quite a long list waiting.

Book of the Month:  Wonder

Need a great inspirational book to kick off summer? Pick up a copy of RJ Palacio’s Wonder. This story features a young boy who enters public school after having been homeschooled due to numerous surgeries. Born with a rare facial deformity, he’s faced the challenge of looking different and now, to add to his challenges, his parents decide it is time for him to go attend public school. Told from various viewpoints, this book reminds us that true beauty and wisdom is found far below the surface of skin. We learn the essential value of friendships, courage, humor and determination. We finish the story ready to notice and appreciate the many “wonders” in our lives.

App of the Month:

If you haven’t already guess, I really enjoy finding and testing out new applications. I’m always on the lookout for great technology, gadgets and apps to enhance and extend education. I was very excited to recently discover an excellent video maker called, Animoto www.animoto.com  This program makes the task of creating videos exceptionally easy. After signing up for an account, you’ll be guided through the editing process which includes uploading content (pictures, words, quotes, etc). Creators select backgrounds/themes and music. I really appreciate the ease of editing and the professional and polished look of the final piece.  Here’s an example of a book trailer that I created to show the reading and literature classes. http://animoto.com/play/Aa637P0Vvfhm50mW0oi7eQ  Once published, the video can be shared via email, social media and youtube.

We want to remind everyone that the library is open this summer. We’d love for everyone to strengthen and extend reading skills (and have fun too!).
